The route begins at the Reichnau Museum. Cross Pirminstraße and follow Seestraße. Take a left turn into Hermannus-Contractus-Straße. The monastery wall has an opening on the left through which you can enter Walahfrid Strabo’s herb garden. To continue, ride to the end of Schulstraße and follow the bike trail to Niederzell. Keep to the right and turn from Im Winkel onto Hörnle. At Im Hörnle 4 you’re invited to visit the private garden of Karin and Gottfried Böhler. Continue on Niederzeller Straße and take a left turn onto Riedstraße. Böhler Vegetables and Plants has a wide range of plants on display in its greenhouses. Return to the marina. From here, the ferry will take you to Allensbach (from April to October – schedule at www.schifffahrtbaumann.de).
In Allensbach, the route leads from the small harbor onto Brunnengasse, around the Nikolaus church into Kirchgasse, which ends in Höhrenbergstraße. Follow the B33, past the mountain of Riesenberg to the Fischerhaus. Take a right turn and then continue heading straight until you reach a country road, where you continue to the left until you reach the Allensbach Wildlife and Recreational Park (follow the signage after the crossroads). The diversity of plants and animals in this park is exciting for children and adults alike. Return to the crossroads. This time keep to the left. Once the forest ends, a path on the left takes you to the Mindelsee lke. This trail passes the Dürrenhof farm and runs along Dürrenhofstraße to Möggingen.
The orchard and botanical garden is situated on the outskirts of the village, near the cemetery. From Dürrenhofstraße turn left, then immediately right onto Liggeringer Straße, then left onto Schulstraße. Follow this all the way to the cemetery which lies across from the orchard. Continue west, past the Tennhof farm and make a left turn down the hill (Im Tenn, then Am Obstberg) past the Max Planck Research Institute for Ornithology. The institute’s Hennhouse is worth a visit!
Now turn left onto Schlossallee and continue along this street to Liggeringer Straße. Cross under the highway. Ride to the end of the forest and take the path along the edge of the forest going east towards Markelfingen. When you reach the first houses, take an immediate right turn, then left onto Ländlestraße. Continue along An der Kindswies all the way to the main street (Hauptstraße). Cross the main street and follow Gnadenstraße all the way to no. 35 (fourth building on the right after the street curves to the left). This is where the Blum family’s small nature garden can be visited, with its pond and Mediterranean plants.
The route then continues along the Lake Constance bike trail to Radolfzell and the town’s municipal park.
On Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays, a motor ship takes you back to Reichenau Island. During in-season months (be sure to check the schedule) it departs from the harbor of Radolfzell to the small harbor of Reichenau-Mittelzell. From there, it takes only a few minutes to return to your starting point at the Mittelzell Museum.
Directions
Start ist beim Museum Reichenau. Wir überqueren die Pirminstraße, folgen der Seestraße und biegen links in die Hermann Contractus Straße ein. Die Klostermauer öffnet sich links für den Walafried-Strabo-Kräutergarten. Über die Schulstraße (bis zum Ende) gelangen wir auf den Radweg nach Niederzell. Rechtshalten und von der Straße Im Winkel ins Hörnle abbiegen. Dort ist Im Hörnle 4 der Privatgarten von Karin und Gottfried Böhler zu finden. Nun fahren wir über die Niederzeller Straße nach links in die Riedstraße. Böhler Gemüse und Pflanzen zeigt in seinen Gewächshäusern ein vielfältiges Pflanzensortiment. Nun geht es zurück zum Yachthafen, von wo in den Monaten April bis Oktober das Fährschiff nach Allensbach ablegt (Fahrzeiten unter http://www.schifffahrtbaumann.de/ ).
In Allensbach führt der Weg von der Schiffslände in die Brunnengasse, um die Nikolauskirche herum in die Kirchgasse, welche in die Höhrenbergstraße mündet. Wir folgen der Höhrenbergstraße nach Westen, rechts in die Holzgasse abbiegen. Über die B33, am Riesenberg vorbei bis Fischerhaus. Hier rechtsabbiegen, bis zur Landstraße vorfahren und links bis zum Wildpark Allensbach fahren (an der Kreuzung links den Schildern folgen). Die Vielfalt von Pflanzen und Tieren begeistert kleine wie große Besucher. Zurück zur Kreuzung und diesmal links halten. Sobald der Wald endet, führt links ein Weg Richtung Mindelsee. Auf diesem Weg gelangen wir vorbei am Dürrenhof über die Dürrenhofstraße nach Möggingen.
Der Streuobst-Sortengarten liegt etwas außerhalb in der Nähe des Friedhofs. Von der Dürrenhofstraße erst links, dann gleich wieder rechts in die Liggeringer Straße, weiter links in die Schulstraße und dieser bis zum Friedhof bzw. dem gegenüberliegenden Streuobstgarten folgen. In Richtung Westen weiter fahren, am Tennhof vorbei und links hinunter (Im Tenn, danach Am Obstberg) vorbei am Max Plank Institut für Ornithologie. An der Landstraße links, und gleich wieder rechts in die Schlossallee. Das Hennhouse des Max Plank Instituts lohnt einen Besuch!
Nun geht es links in die Schlossallee bis zur Liggeringer Straße und dieser Straße folgen. Die Bundestraße unterqueren, wenn links der Wald aufhört, den Weg am Waldrand Richtung Osten bzw. Markelfingen nehmen. Bei den ersten Häusern gleich rechts, dann links in die Ländlestraße einbiegen und danach rechts der Straße An der Kindswiese bis zur Hauptstraße folgen, diese überqueren und der Gnadenseestraße bis zum Haus Nr. 35 folgen (nach der Linksbiegung das 4. Haus rechts). Hier zeigt das Ehepaar Blum einen kleinen naturnahen Garten mit Teich und mediterraner Bepflanzung.
Die Tour führt nun entlang des Bodensee-Radweges nach Radolfzell zum dortigen Stadtgarten.
Zurück auf die Insel bringt uns Donnerstag, Samstag und Sonntag das Motorschiff Reichenau. Während der Saison (Fahrplan beachten!) fährt es vom Hafen Radolfzell zur Schiffslände Reichenau-Mittelzell. In wenigen Minuten gehts zurück zum Startort beim Museum in Mittelzell.
